Nikon Coolpix P7800 – an oldie but a goodie

Nikon P7800 - intro

I really like the aesthetics/shape of the Nikon P7800 – and also the Canon G11 (actually, the entire G series has that "brick-red" look 😊). Besides its interesting design, the camera offers a lot of creative possibilities. That's why it found its way into my bag – a camera that, at the time of its release (late 2013), was positioned as a flagship model in the premium compact segment.

Construction

The most significant change from its predecessor (the P7700 model) is the return of the viewfinder – this time in electronic form (EVF) with a resolution of 921,000 dots and 100% frame coverage. This is a key feature when shooting in bright sunlight, when the LCD screen becomes difficult to read. Unfortunately, it's a very weak viewfinder – but it does come in handy sometimes. So, it's better to have it than not 🙂

The sensor is a 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor with a resolution of 12.2 MP, and the lens is a bright NIKKOR (f/2.0–4.0) with a focal length equivalent of 28–200 mm, thus still offering good image detail and color.

The magnesium alloy housing makes the camera exceptionally durable and comfortable to hold. It features two control dials, an exposure dial right under the thumb, dedicated function buttons, and a fully articulated screen, making creative framing much easier.

Interesting Facts

Built-in ND Filter: The camera has an integrated 3-stop neutral density filter, which allows for the use of longer shutter speeds or a wider aperture, even in very bright conditions.

File Format: Nikon uses the RAW file format with the .NRW extension for this series (instead of the typical .NEF format for DSLRs), allowing for greater flexibility in post-production.

Common Battery: This model uses the EN-EL14 battery, which is compatible with many popular Nikon DSLRs (D3000 and D5000 series), making it a great convenience for users of this system.

CLS System: Despite its compact size, the camera's hot shoe not only allows for the mounting of an external flash but also allows for wireless control of the flash unit via the Nikon Creative Lighting System (as a controller/commander).

Specifications

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 offers a wide range of shutter speeds, depending on the selected shooting mode and aperture setting:

Automatic and Priority Modes (P, S, A): The standard range is from 1 second to 1/4000 second.

Manual Mode (M): Allows for significantly longer exposure times, offering a range from 60 seconds to 1/4000 second. However, it's worth noting that the longest shutter speed (60 s) is available at ISO settings between 80 and 400.

Aperture Dependence: The fastest shutter speed of 1/4000 second is only available with a stopped-down aperture (f/4.5–f/8 at wide-angle or f/7.1–f/8 at telephoto). With the aperture wide open (f/2 or f/4), the fastest shutter speed is 1/2000 second.

Continuous Shooting Modes: In continuous shooting modes (H and M), the shutter speed cannot exceed 1/8 second.

Scene Modes: In specialized modes, such as "Fireworks," the shutter speed is fixed at approximately 4 seconds.

The camera has a mechanical shutter and an electronic CMOS shutter. Additionally, for users who need precision with long exposures, the P7800 allows the use of the optional ML-L3 remote control or a cable release.

EFFECTS

I hate the whole range of effects in cameras like Toy Effect (Pentax), Sepia Effect (Nikon), Painting Effect (Nikon, Pentax, I think), and other primitive simulations. The exceptions for me are Creative Monochrome and Cross Processing, which are quite effective. Monochrome offers a wide range of adjustments (e.g., noise gradation), so it's fun to play around with. Cross Processing gives me four lead colors to choose from.

Furthermore, the Nikon has a built-in flash, which, combined with these effects, produces truly vintage results (see the last photo below).

Creative Monochrome

Cross Process

Importantly, creativity with this model doesn't stop at stills. In Movie CSM mode, you can record video using filters such as painting, sepia, or cross-processing. If you prefer to work with "clean" files, the camera offers a rich menu of post-production retouching options, including D-Lighting for tonal enhancement of shadows and in-body RAW file processing.

Summary

In 2026, the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is already a photographic classic, representing the latest generation of advanced compact cameras with smaller sensors (1/1.7-inch). Although technologically inferior to modern mirrorless cameras, it still possesses features that make it a valuable tool for the discerning photographer.

Summary for 2026:

Optics Beyond Time: The bright f/2.0–4.0 lens with a versatile 28–200mm range remains its strongest point, offering razor-sharp sharpness and image clarity often lacking in modern smartphones.

The Analog Control Experience: Thanks to its robust magnesium alloy housing, numerous physical dials, and an EVF, the camera offers SLR-like ergonomics, a highly valued improvement in the age of touchscreens.

Creative Functionality: A built-in 3-stop ND filter, effects, RAW (.NRW) file support, and a fully articulated LCD screen make it still a highly functional tool for thoughtful landscape and street photography.

Era Limitations: Be aware of its age – the autofocus system can be slow, especially in low light, and image quality at sensitivities above ISO 400 clearly falls short of modern standards.

In today's world dominated by AI algorithms, the Nikon P7800 remains an honest, manual tool that offers complete control over the image-making process instead of speed. It's truly a joy when you want something different, something simple, interesting, and less professional. The camera itself is already a lot of fun, but you can add an analog viewfinder, as pictured below, or attach a retro filter that changes color and softens the image.
